Painters, Dwelling Depot provide a experienced touch to aid vets at Post 199

EDWARDSVILLE — David “Doc” Chambliss likes to assist his fellow veterans, and he found a eager companion in Edwardsville American Legion Write-up 199.

Chambliss, who is a expert paint expert and the veterans’ representative for Property Depot in Edwardsville, was joined by 3 other expert painters as they painted the lounge and entrance hall at the American Legion, 58 Illinois Route 157.

Chambliss and his crew volunteered to do the painting, though Home Depot donated the paint and other materials.

“I fulfilled Doc at Household Depot in the paint office and I was basically searching for shade samples to see about portray this making,” claimed Larry Ranek, vice president of the American Legion Park Board. “He explained to me about some other jobs that he did for veterans and for veterans’ companies and he claimed he could probably assist us out.


“We established up an appointment and achieved up here with our committee and we selected a color. House Depot said they would donate the paint and Doc has painters who are donating their time. He stated, ‘you don’t want amateurs portray your lounge’ and they are accomplishing the career for us.”

Chambliss, who is a U.S. Military veteran, also owns his personal company, Progressive Coatings, primarily based out of Collinsville.


Saturday’s occupation, which started at 8 a.m. and took about four hours to total, is one particular of several volunteer jobs he has completed for veterans.

“I’m a veteran, so I have often been a lot more partial to veteran-style do the job,” Chambliss said. “After 30-some decades of portray, I’m quite considerably receiving absent from the civilian side of it and just aiming for veterans.

“If it is a bigger career, anything that involves a lot more than just portray, I can discover contractors or staff members from the shop. We can rake yards and slice trees and clean gutters, anything at all like that. I can go in and paint just one space for anyone and they are flabbergasted. It is very rewarding and these days, I get extra out of the reward than the money side of matters. It is pleasant doing some thing for persons who value it.”

Chambliss, who been a painter because right before his Military days, was more than delighted to enable the American Legion with its painting job.

“Larry (Ranek) arrived into Household Depot inquiring about paint and I noticed his hat mentioned he was armed forces and he explained to me what he was executing (at the American Legion) and I asked if I could get a hold of a few of people and see if I can get them jointly and do the portray for him,” Chambliss stated.

“I went to my shop manager and advised him about it, and he reported to do regardless of what I want to do and get no matter what (supplies) I require to get. On Saturday, Chambliss was assisted by Sherri Grider of Grider Painting in Bunker Hill, Travis Gillig of Signature Custom made Painting in Edwardsville and Ron Martin of The Ultimate Touch Painting in Mount Olive.

“They all own their have company and they are clients at Home Depot, so I questioned them to occur and help me with this undertaking,” Chambliss mentioned.

Gillig, who routinely buys paint from Chambliss at Dwelling Depot, jumped at the chance to support the American Legion.

“Doc asked me if I wished to be a part of this project and I claimed ‘absolutely.’ I love coming up right here and playing golfing and issues like that, so I’m satisfied to come up below,” Gillig stated. “I’ve performed initiatives before on houses for the mentally disabled. If I have time to do anything like this, I’m happy to aid.”

Martin, like Chambliss, has been a painter for most of his lifestyle. He also welcomed the chance to assistance with the portray at Write-up 199.

“I’ve identified Doc for a number of years from Dwelling Depot and it is the only place I get my paint because it is incredibly higher excellent,” Martin reported. “Doc questioned me to support with this undertaking and I instructed him it was no challenge simply because I’m often readily available on Saturdays.

Chambliss, meanwhile, is hoping to find one more job wherever he can support veterans.
