Juneteenth celebrates stop of slavery across Confederate states

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is a holiday marking slaves in Texas discovering in 1865 that they had been freed by President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. The executive buy outlawed slavery in Confederate states starting Jan. 1, 1863, the midpoint of the Civil War.

The holiday getaway has various other names that can be used interchangeably, like Independence Working day and Emancipation Day.

“Juneteenth is a unifying holiday break,” said Steve Williams, president of the Nationwide Juneteenth Observance Foundation, to United states These days in 2020. “It is the completion of the celebration of freedom in The usa.”

When is it celebrated?

Officially, Juneteenth is June 19 (“Juneteenth” being a portmanteau of “June” and “Nineteenth”). Celebrations are typically shifted to drop on the 3rd Saturday of June.
